Holiday Style with Belle + Bliss Boutique

Wool Slippers from Belle + Bliss Boutique

One of my favourite things about the holiday season is cozy, snuggly fashion! With all the visiting and celebrating it’s a huge mom time saver to have a few new items in your closet that you can literally grab and put together an outfit in an instant. Thankfully Belle + Bliss, a local online boutique, has just launched their Winter 2017 Collection and we’re in love with pretty much all of it- for ourselves as well as gifts for the stylish women in our life!

Belle + Bliss Boutique was started by a local mom in 2014 who was looking for alternatives in fashion that suited the busy mom life. It all started with bringing in tunics that paired easily with leggings and since then they have focused on carefully curating women’s fashion that is comfortable, stylish, flattering and affordable. Most of the pieces can be mixed and matched and easily paired with boots or heels and your favourite pair of leggings or jeans (though they do sell those too!).

Here’s a little peek at some of the gorgeous new items from the Winter 2017 Collection!

Made for Mama Makeup: LipSense (Discount+Giveaway!)

5 Reasons why I Love LipSense

Why I love LipSense

Moms! You need to know about this product I’ve been using for the last month or so: it’s called LipSense. No doubt you’ve seen it here and there and probably wondered if it really works. Well, I’ve been putting it to the test, like all the tests. I have camped, paddled down the North Saskatchewan River, gone to a concert AND been a bridesmaid in a full day wedding all while wearing LipSense. The overall verdict? This stuff is amazing!

Here’s 5 Reasons Why I am in Love with LipSense:

  1. It really does stay on all day. Like I said, I’ve been testing it and it surpassed my expectations. Sometimes I put it on at night when I am binging on Netflix by myself, because pretty, and when I wake up in the morning my son asks me why I am wearing such nice lipstick! As a mom, we all know that it’s a good day if we even get to dry shampoo our hair, no one has time for overly fussy lipstick. A few steps in the morning, gloss throughout the day, and you are set.
  2. There is no transfer or smudging on to yourself, babies, husbands, drink glasses…. anything! I’m known as “aunty sparkles” because whenever I give a baby back to its mom they will likely be covered in lipstick kisses or some sort of blush/bronzer, not anymore for the lipstick at least! I’ve also avoided dark lip colours in the past because it looks so awful when it smudges, cue hot mess mom at the end of a wine night…. With LipSense the only thing left behind is sometimes a hint of clear gloss if I have just applied it.
  3. You can buy a remover for mistakes. Aptly called, Ooops!, the remover is helpful in the beginning as you master the application (which does not take long). It is also handy for removing at the end of the day, though quite often I find it will come off with soap and water as well.
  4. It does not dry your lips out. I had sworn off long lasting lip colour. Every time I have tried it in the past I have ended up with dry, chapped lips and a ring of colour left around the outside of my lips….not sexy, guys. With LipSense you just apply the gloss on top of the colour whenever you start to feel a little parched. My lips don’t feel dry or angry when I remove it at the end of the day either.
  5. Tons of colour combinations! I went safe the first time and chose “Pink Champagne” a lighter shade. I knew after trying it twice that I wanted something bolder, so I bought “Dark Pink” a few days later. The good thing is you can layer shades and create all sorts of great customizable colours. They even have various gloss options, including a matte one that I must try next.
  6. I feel beautiful. This is perhaps the most important part. As a mama who works from home most of the time while wearing a sports bra, t-shirt, yoga pants and top knot- this is the most glamorous part of my day. It is the perfect ‘pick me up and make me look pulled together for preschool pick up’ product.

Some Tips for Wearing LipSense:

  • Make sure your lips are clean and dry. Do not apply chap sticks beforehand.
  • Apply 3 layers, make sure each layer dries before you add another.
  • If you get crumbs on your lips after eating just brush them off before you re-apply your gloss.
  • Don’t freak out if your lips tingle the first few times you apply the colour! The company says that it is caused by dry lips and will cease after you stop using other wax and paraffin based lip products. This was true for me, I hardly get any tingle now and I’m rarely using my chap stick.

How to Host a Clothing Swap!

We all know that once you become a mom the priority so often shifts from numero uno to the kids. It can be really difficult to find time AND money to upkeep your wardrobe when your kids are growing out of their pants at a rapid rate. One of the greatest things we’ve been introduced to in recent years is clothing swaps! This is a budget friendly, eco friendly and all around awesome way to clean your closest and re-fill it ‘with new to you’ items, perfect for the upcoming change in season.

What is a Clothing Swap and How Do I Do It?

Literally, what it sounds like. You bring your old clothes and accessories that no longer fit or suit you and give them away to other women while collecting some of theirs. The rest gets sent to a charity at the end of the night.

First, find a date that works for the majority of your clan. We find that an evening without kids is best as these can go long into the night! Typically plan for about 3 hours or more.

Invite everyone that you are comfortable having in your home, the more people the more options. Invite ALL shapes and sizes of women, obviously. Ask people to bring a friend if you need more people. We find that 10-15 women is a good number.

Ask people to BYOB and bring a small snack. This just makes it easier for you if hosting!

We like to tell everyone that they must have a minimum of 10 items to bring to the swap. This ensures that everyone participating has contributed. Usually we don’t set a maximum number of items- some ladies have been known to bring multiple garbage bags of clothes!

Plan to swap clothes, shoes, purses, jewellery, scarves, jackets…..all of it!

Sit in a circle in the living room and have everyone introduce themselves. Write every guest’s name on a slip of paper. The first woman to start will hold up her items one by one and say something short about the item (size, brand, style), all women who would like the item raise their hands. If only one hand is raised that lady gets the item, if two hands are up then rock paper scissors determines it and if there’s more than that interested put the names of the ladies with hands up in a bowl and draw the winner of the item.

If no one wants an item simply throw it in the middle and it becomes free game for anyone who might decide they want it or it gets donated by the hostess later. One rule that we’ve implemented is no bad mouthing your items or your body! Everyone has a different style preference and body shaming yourself is just a big no no. Create a space of acceptance and safety.

The next day call a charity that does home pick ups for the items that are left over. We’ve used Boys and Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters and Diabetes Canada. Or, you can always drop it off yourself at your favourite local charity.

Wear a tank top and leggings so that you can easily try things on and throw them back in the middle pile if you change your mind. Once an item goes back into the middle it is fair game so pay attention when someone is trying on an item you had your eyes on!

Take turns hosting and invite new people. Inviting new people not only helps you to get to know more friends, but brings new items into the swap as well. We try to swap every season if possible.

Have fun! There’s nothing like going through your treasures at the end of the night and feeling like you off loaded some of the items in your closet that were weighing you down. My personal favourite items I’ve come home with were a Kate Spade handbag, some Lululemon pants and a cozy wool sweater from H&M.

Have you been to a clothing swap before?
